Project 365, Day 90 - Yarn

Day 90 - Yarn, originally uploaded by Here Be Dragons.

I'm going to try and get caught up - or at least caught up part of the way - with my Project 365 entries. Now that my summer course is finished, I actually have some extra time to doodle on the computer (in between packing boxes, that is).

This is the photo from July 3rd. (OMG that's a long time ago). :D I think part of the reason I like knitting and crocheting is that yarn can be so pretty, particularly the colors. I'm not sure what I'll make with any of this yarn, but just looking at it in balls and skeins makes me feel happy.

I like this photo, although I think it could use a bit of adjustment - the colors should be a bit brighter.

Project 365 - Connor Learns to Crochet

This summer, Connor decided that one of his big projects would be learning to crochet. I was a bit skeptical - he's asked about this before, and when I tried to teach him, he lost interest really quickly. This time, though, he was serious . . . and I'm thrilled to say that he has learned to crochet, and he's actually very good at it. Here are a few Project 365 photos which document this journey (I'm sure there will be more to follow; he asked me to buy him more yarn today, because he wants to make things for all his Webkinz plush toys).

Day 92: Connor Learns to Crochet

This is one of his first attempts at learning the stitches:

Day 107 - Crochet Master!

Here he is working on his first amigurumi project:

Day 108 - Amigurumi Whirlms

And here they are! He crocheted these whirlms (characters from the "Viva Pinata!" video game) all by himself, with no pattern, and no help from me. I didn't even know he was making the first one until he was almost finished with it. Aren't they cute? And best of all, my little boy crocheted them all by himself. *is proud*

Day 106 - Lego Ground Zero

When he's not crocheting, he's been playing with legos. This is the way his room looked a few days ago. Total lego explosion:

Here are a few visitors I've photographed lately:

Day 96 - See-Through Butterfly?

This butterfly wasn't really see-through. I had the shutter speed set fairly slow, so when it flew away after I'd already started to take the picture, this was the result. This little fellow was the focus of some excitement in our house - we found him fluttering around inside! Took Connor and I a while to capture him: I tried to "net" him inside a paper bag, but in the end, was able to trap him between the bag and my cupped hand.

Day 105 - Red-tailed Hawk

Definitely not the best hawk photo I've ever taken, but it was the best I took on this particular day. :D

Day 102 - Garden Cuttings

Day 102 - Garden Cuttings, originally uploaded by Here Be Dragons.

I decided to try and take some of the plants from my current garden with me when we move . . . by growing new plants from cuttings. Here are the cuttings I took - lavenders, rosemary and a desert sage. RIght now, they're (hopefully) putting out roots in some rooting gel I got at the garden store. More pictures when I have some results. :)

Day 109 - Pippin and Buddha

Meet Pippin, soon to become a world traveler! Well, maybe not the whole world, but a big chunk of the United States. Pippin is our Traveling Teddy, part of a round robin swap on Ravelry. The idea is that everyone in the group (there are nine members) will send out a teddy bear to someone "downstream" - each person along the way will make or buy a small gift for the bear, to be put in the backpack (which I crocheted). Then the bear goes to the next person, until it comes all the way home again. Kind of like a traveling scarf, only it's . . . well, a bear. :D

Pippin will be starting his journey later this week. In the meantime, he decided to have a chat with the Buddha. :)

(BTW, fellow Ravelers, there's another traveling teddy round robin looking for members - check out the "Traveling-Teddy" group; I think the round robin is #8).

Felted (Fulled) Sweater-to-Totebag

Here are some photos of my most recent craft project - I recycled a sweater, turning it into a tote bag after felting it (well, really, I fulled it, but since most people call it felting, that's what I'll call it from here on out). Some of these are Project 365 photos (the last of this batch, in fact - after this post, I'M ALL CAUGHT UP! *happy dancing*).

I started out with this 100% wool sweater, which I bought in Scotland, but never wear because it's not really a good color for me. It's a nice sweater, though, and reminds me of a place I love, so I didn't want to get rid of it. When I saw a pattern on Ravelry for repurposing sweaters by turning them into tote bags, I decided to try it. Take note of the size of the sweater in comparison to the dime (on the floor under the sleeve in the left of the photo):

Now, I'll be able to carry around my knitting and crochet projects in this handy bag, which up until now, was sitting lonely in my closet. :)
