A couple of weeks ago, I saw a goal at 43 Things that I thought sounded cool, so I added it to my list. Tonight, I finally finished it. The goal is: "Make a CD of music that makes me happy," and I really enjoyed doing this. It was a great exercise . . . although not as easy as I thought it would be. In going through the, oh, 3,700+ tracks I have in iTunes, I thought it would be fairly simple to find songs that make me happy. After all, most of the music is in my collection because I enjoy it, right?
Well, yes . . . but. :D Turns out that, when I really stopped and thought about it, most of the music I enjoy and listen to regularly doesn’t really make me “happy.” It might touch me in another way, but almost all my very favourite stuff is melancholy or bittersweet in some way. Or heavy metal, or opera or classical. Or things that are relaxing that I play in the background while doing other things. Not so much with the “happy” music.
It took some searching, but out of my 11+ DAYS of audio in iTunes, I finally managed to find an hour’s worth of music which genuinely does make me happy. (I also thought of one track I didn’t own and needed to, so it’s been purchased and added). Some of it makes me smile or feel lovely and peaceful; most of it, though, makes me want to move my body. Apparently, that's good for my mood. :D
So . . . here it is my Happy Songs Playlist:
“Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles
“Gayatri Mantra” by Deva Premal
“Vamos a Bailar” by the Gipsy Kings (this has long been my "driving in heavy traffic" song - no matter HOW backed up the freeway is, I can put this on and feel HAPPY)!
“Holding Out for a Hero” by Frou Frou
“The Rain Song,” by Led Zeppelin
“Marrakesh Night Market” by Loreena McKennitt
“Down at the Twist and Shout” by Mary Chapin Carpenter
“Somethin’ Stupid” by Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman
“Jesu Christe/Cum Sancto Spiritu” from W.A. Mozart’s “Mass in C Minor” (Ooh, wonderful memories of singing this with the OEBS).
“I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor (this is the one I had to purchase; I only had a karaoke track in iTunes)
“In My Life” by the Beatles
And finally . . . my personal “theme” song (another 43 Things goal I completed a while back):
“I Hope You Dance” by LeeAnn Womack
I’m going to keep the CD I just burned in my car, so I’ll always have something cheerful at hand!
And, if anyone else felt like doing this, I'd love to see your lists. It might make a cool meme. Plus, at the end you'll have a CD filled with music you love! :)
(OMG! I've just noticed that there is NOTHING by DA MAN on my list. I might have to rethink this, and find a piece by Bach that makes me happy. Most of his music I love in different ways. But it's a pretty glaring omission, isn't it)? O_o
