Keeping Track

Well, I’ve had this listed as a goal for a while, and haven’t done much about it. So, I’ve decided to start keeping track. We’ll see how that goes, until I get in the habit and feel like I’ve “completed” this goal. So, over the past several days:

9/17 – did a full backbend (wheel/urdhva danurasana) over the back of a chair. I don’t mind doing this pose on the floorm but I was scared about doing it over a chair. It was part of my yoga teacher training, though (it’s apparently a good way to help people who’ve not done the pose before get into it), so I did it, even though I was terrified that the chair was going to tip backwards and send me crashing into the wall and floor. But it was fine. It actually felt pretty good, once I got all the way in and felt stable. I did keep my toes pressing HARD into the floor though. No way I was going to let myself tip over. :D

9/18 – I went ice skating for the first time in about 20 years. And it was SCARY getting on the ice the first time. After a little while, though, my balance came back, and by the end of the session, I was zooming all the way around the rink. (Okay, so “zooming” might be an exaggeration, but I was going reasonably fast).

9/19 – I drove up and down Mt. Diablo (several times, actually). And no, this isn’t a terrifying thing for me – I do it at least once every year. But it is a winding mountain road with drop-offs and no railing, so it pushes up just a bit on my fear of heights. Also, I let my son do some rock climbing. Just a tiny bit nerve-wracking. :D

9/20 – I assisted in teaching a yoga class. Defnitely nerve-wracking, but I think it went really well. Afterwards, several of the students came around and thanked me for giving them adjustments, so YAY!

I must applaud your accomplishments. Challenging yourself truly succeeds in contributing to the growth process. It's something I'm beginning to focus on . . . very slowly.

I'm having problems picturing this yoga bend. Any way to get a pic?

Ack! I just realized that I never answered this. I did look for a photo, but didn't find one of exactly what we were doing. Let's see if I can explain it better . . .

You start out sitting in a folding chair - just sitting the regular way. Then anchor the front legs of the chair with your heels, keeping your toes/balls of the feet firmly planted on the floor. Then, look backward and lift your body upwards (still keeping feet planted), while you bend backwards over the top of the chair, reaching your arms up and over to find the wall (you should have started with your chair pretty close - a foot or two away from the wall). Does that make more sense? It was sort of weird, really, so I wouldn't recommend trying it. :D

yoga bend
OK, I can picture that much better. :) Sounds like a really good back stretch! But, no, there's no way _I_ would try it. LOL
