Review of Lost: A Novel: #123

by Gregory Maguire

“Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister” is one of my favorite books of all-time, so I’ve been looking forward to reading this one for a while. Unfortunately, it turned out to be something of a disappointment. The story was interesting, but I found the writing to be uncomfortable to read (which, probably, was the intention, given the story line, but I did find it particularly enjoyable). Also, the main character is a difficult person whom I find it hard to like, enjoy, or really even care about. I almost cared more about all the people around her, hoping she wouldn’t do anything to harm them. On the whole, it was interesting and I did keep reading, but I can’t say I enjoyed it. 6/10

I've been wanting to read 'Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister,' but I never did because I was kind of disappointed with 'Wicked.' I LOVE the musical, but the book was...whatever. So you think 'Confessions' is his best work?

Read "Confessions." I thought it was AMAZING. And I, too, was disappointed with "Wicked." I haven't seen the musical - partly because I read the book before the musical came out, and I was so unimpressed that I have never bothered with the musical. (I'll probably decide to see it eventually, though, since I have heard good things about it). I was a HUGE fan of the Oz books as a child, which is probably why I didn't like "Wicked." It just didn't seem "right" to me, somehow.

So, don't judge "Confessions" by "Wicked." I thought "Confessions" was brilliant. It's well-written, and the story is a fantastic rendition of the "Cinderella" story. The characters are real people, instead of storybook archetypes, and I just loved his characterizations. I thought it was really, really good. :)

Ah, see I read the musical script for 'Wicked' before the actual book which is why I was so disappointed in it lol. But yeah, I'll definitely check out 'Confessions.' =D
