Day 1: April 5th, 2008

I’ve decided to make a year-long photography commitment – I’m going to take at least one photo per day, every day, for the next year. I haven’t been doing enough photography lately, and this seems like a good way to give myself a “boost.”

I like these guidelines, so intend to follow them:

http://photojojo.com/content/tutorials/project-365-take-a-photo-a-day/

This is Day 1. I’ll be posting photos to my LiveJournal (and possibly a 365 Opera community); I probably won’t post every day, but will post them at least once a week.

It seemed appropriate to begin the project with a self-portrait; I took this one while playing around in Mac Photobooth.

I know several of my LJ friends have done something similar (or are in the middle of their year right now). I’d love to hear about your experiences! :)

DO IT! We could do it together, in fact, which would be fun and a great motivator!

Yes! DO IT! DO IT!

If you start today, we can do it together, and keep one another motivated. YEAH!

I think I'm going to take the pictures but upload them two or three times a week as opposed to every day. Its easier for me that way. XD

I suspect that after the novelty wears off, that's how I'll be doing it, too. I do want to make sure I upload and post my pictures at least once a week, but probably every day will get old after a relatively short time.

Also, I was very happy to hear your grandpa's good news! *hugs you tight*

Hey! Your icon! Look at my photo for today (when it's posted, which should happen in the next few minutes). Also, you'll get a chuckle out of the meme results I'll be posting . . . um, when I get around to writing them. Again, probably in the next hour or so. :)

Hee - I actually have some lily images I need to upload and post myself. :D This icon (and the images) were taken about a week ago. I love lillies - one of my favourite flowers.

Also, I was very happy to hear your grandpa's good news! *hugs you tight*

Thanks - *hugs back* :)

I started a "daily" photo blog (usually updated in spurts), but it's just general photography - not self portraits. Maybe someday :)
It's been so much fun rummaging through my flickr collection to find a photo that suits my mood each time I'm posting :)

I'm not going to do all self-portraits . . . I just figured it would be nice to start with one. I'll probably do at least one a month, but most of the pics will be of other stuff. :D Plus, the point of this commitment is to take new photos every day - heh, I've got a huge backload if I wanted to post something new every day, but I'm going to discipline myself to post a brand new picture every day. Which will probably be a real challenge for me some days, but I think it will be a good experience, overall. :)

I was doing something similar last year (though ithout sufficient diligence) in that for a period I was carrying my digital camera in as I walked to work, and taking a new photo to serve as a desktop background at work for that day.

Maybe I should start that up again.

I think I remember that . . . you should definitely start it up again. And then post them to LJ, too! We can have a photo club or something! :)

:) I started doing it today, then realised that I didn't have the thing I need to get the photos off my camera onto my computer at work :)

Oh well. Tomorrow :)

Yeah, I'm a bit intimidated by the commitment, but I figure it's worth trying. I've done similar every-day things before (although not for a whole year). I want to give this a chance, though. Something to get myself taking photos again.

Oh, and I heard something weird today, I'm wondering if it's true . . . are they really considering flooding the area where the Great Pyramids are? O_o

Yeah, my take on the pyramid thing was the same as yours . . . how could they flood that area? Plus, it seems like that would make a BIG impact on tourism to Egypt, which is probably a fairly big industry, isn't it? In any case, I'm glad you've not heard anything about it; I figured that if it was true, you'd have heard something.

I know what you mean about things starting to feel like work. Instead of planning to let myself miss a day now and then, I've decided that I will be okay if some days I just take some crappy picture with my cell phone (or a cheesy self-portrait with Photobooth on the computer, like the one I posted yesterday). I think that will help me feel less pressure. I don't need to do a Big Photoshoot every day. But on the days I'm in the mood for that, I'll have some motivation, I think. Definitely I think you should come along for the ride! You tend to post pictures regularly anyway. :)

Oh, and my picture for today will have an Egyptian theme, since I spent the morning at Rosicrucian Park, which is home to the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum.

That's a cool picture!

I'm in my second year of doing it. It's been fun, though it's really difficult to come up with pictures some days, especially if I've spent all day working at the computer. It has made me much more aware of photo ops, that's for sure. :) I don't think it's made me a better photographer, though. (Goes back to laziness.) It's been a great way to keep in touch/get in touch with friends and family, though.

I say do it. If for no other reason than to give me more stuff to look at/read instead of working. :)

Hee. I know what you mean about laziness. That's something I'd like to work on this year - there are so many things I'd like to learn how to do with my camera, and I've got the resources I need - filters and things, and books on how to use everything. Not to mention all my camera's manual settings (I use a few, but there is so much more I could do). I'm hoping that this goal will help me be motivated to learn more about the camera. Of course, probably sometime around July I'll just be posting pictures of Connor sleeping (taken with my camera phone @ 11.45, just to make sure I got my "photo of the day"). But . . . we'll see.

Actually, seeing your daily photos is one of the things that got me interested in doing this. I didn't realize you were in your second year, though. That's impressive. :)

Oh, you should totally do that! I love looking at photographs, especially ones where interesting stuff is done.

As for posting - well, you see how well mine goes. :) Sometimes, I know what I want to photograph but take the picture the next day when there's actual light to do it. I've decided that that's okay by me.

After the first year was up, I thought about stopping, but it felt like there would be something missing. Plus my MIL has told me often that she loves seeing what's going on with us (like when Mike forgets to call for a while). So, I figured I'd keep going while it was still fun. We'll see how much longer it goes. :) It's a nice way to look back.

i did this same project from Sept '06 to Sept '08 and it was one of the best things I've ever done. My photography skills improved greatly but more importantly, I learned how to SEE things. Everything in the world can be beautiful or interesting if you just look at it from a different perspective.

LOL! I know! Except I think of it more as an alien sort of look. Like something from Doctor Who. I'm the pink glowy head alien woman! Ooh!

But hee hee hee . . . yeah, I can take more weirdo photos in Photobooth. Stay tuned for more. Maybe I'll do "pop art" next. Or "x-ray." The "x-ray" things look REALLY freaky. :D

(Edited to fix stupid typo. Because even in a teeny, tiny comment like this, I can't be trusted to proofread effectively) :P

I tried to post this earlier around 330 your time and for some reason El Jay was in the dumper. ANYWAY. I was looking at this pic and thinking that it looked very Cure or Siouxie. :D

I'm 15 shots away from completing my year self-portrait project. I've actually missed the odd day here and there (started on April 5 last year, and it is already April 8, which means I've either miscounted, or missed 18 days...yeowch, I didn't think I'd missed so many!)

Its been fun...and frustrating. I often get to the end of my day and realize I've not taken my photo yet, and have to scramble to do something. Luckily, I always know what my subject is! And some of them aren't special at all. But seen as a whole, it is pretty impressive!
