Project 365, Day 48: Shitake Mushrooms

Shitake Mushrooms, originally uploaded by Here Be Dragons.

Day 48 is a photo of some shitake mushrooms which we are cultivating at home. At the Maker Faire, when we saw that there was a booth selling "grow mushrooms at home" kits, I knew Connor would love that. (Actually, Joy and Amy were the ones who first spotted the mushrooms, and knew that they'd be a hit with Connor). So, we bought a couple of kits - these shitake mushrooms, and also some oyster mushrooms. The oysters haven't quite sprouted yet, but when they do, I'll take some pictures of them, too.

There are a few more photos of these mushrooms here:

The other mushroom photos were taken when we were living in Pennsylvania. Those are mushrooms that Connor collected one day during an organized mushrooming hike at the John James Audubon Center ( http://pa.audubon.org/centers_mill_grove.html ). He brought them all home to show me (since I hadn't gone along on the hike), and then I took photos so that we could do some drawings and paintings of them later. (Haven't gotten around to that yet, but I will one of these days). He found some really cool mushrooms that day.

Ooh! Your mushrooms are gorgeous. I don't know what kind they are, either. Mushrooms can be tricky to ID, although Connor does a decent job of it.
